How to Merge, Split, and Extract PDF Pages Safely

A practical workflow for combining PDFs or extracting a reviewable subset of pages without losing track of order and source files.

Decide whether to merge or extract

Merging joins complete PDFs in the order you select them. It is useful for a packet whose source documents should stay whole, such as a cover followed by a report. Extraction creates a new PDF from selected pages of one source, such as pages 1-3, 5 and 8-10.

Neither operation edits the source. Keep the originals until you open and check the generated PDF. A page subset should not become your only record when the complete source has legal, archival or operational value.

Prepare files and understand the limits

The merge tool accepts 2–20 PDFs. Each file can be up to 100 MB, the combined upload can be up to 300 MB, and each source can contain up to 1,000 pages. Split uses one PDF with the same 100 MB and 1,000-page limits. A renamed file is not necessarily a readable PDF.

Encrypted or password-protected PDFs are not supported. If you are authorized to handle the document, remove protection from a copy through the source application or an approved owner workflow. Never bypass protection or upload material you are not allowed to process.

  • Open each file in a local PDF reader and confirm it is a real PDF.
  • Remove private or restricted material that does not need to be uploaded.
  • Record clear filenames and page counts so the output can be checked.

Merge in a deliberate order

Selection order becomes merge order. Rename local copies with sortable prefixes such as 01-cover.pdf and 02-report.pdf instead of relying on how a file picker happens to display names.

When page sizes, orientations or sources differ, make a small test merge first. Inspect the boundary between every pair of source documents, not only the first page.

  1. Keep source copies.

Do not replace originals that you may need for comparison.

  2. Arrange the queue.

Use numeric prefixes or confirm the numbered selection order in the queue.

  3. Merge complete PDFs.

Choose at least two and no more than twenty supported PDFs.

  4. Check boundaries and total pages.

Open the output and inspect the first and last page of every source document.

Extract pages with an explicit selection

Enter individual pages and inclusive ranges separated by commas, for example 1-3,5,8-10. Whitespace is ignored. The output follows the entered order, so 5,1-2 begins with page 5. Duplicate page numbers are included once.

For a long document, extract a small representative range first. Verify the page count, order, visible page labels, rotation and any table continuation or attachment that depends on context.

  1. Choose one source PDF.

Split mode accepts one PDF. In this example, select the checked five-page merged.pdf.

  2. Write the final page rule.

Enter 1,3,5 after recording the source page count and target pages.

  3. Read it back before submitting.

Confirm every page exists, every range runs forward and the order is intentional.

Download and review the temporary result

Source and output PDFs are temporary server files. The default cleanup period is 30 minutes, so download promptly and save the verified PDF where your own retention and access controls apply.

Before sharing, open the output and check page count, order, orientation, boundaries, signatures, tables, forms and attachments. Do not treat a task link as permanent storage.

  • The output page count matches the selection: this example has 3 pages.
  • The order is correct: pages 1, 3 and 5 of the merged source.
  • Orientation, tables, signatures and attachments are intact.
  • The file is downloaded to your own storage before the temporary link expires.

Frequently asked questions

Can I merge more than twenty PDFs?

No. The current limit is 20 source PDFs. Organize authorized files in smaller batches and review each result.

Can extracted pages be reordered?

Yes. The output follows the entered order, so 5,1-2 starts with page 5. Duplicates are included once.

Why was a file rejected when its name ended in .pdf?

The service checks that the upload is a readable PDF and rejects password-protected files. Export or repair an authorized copy in the source application.
